Before a Thanksgiving Day matchup against Washington, the Dallas Cowboys honored their strength and conditioning coordinator, Markus Paul, by taking a knee and holding a moment of silence. The Cowboys are also honoring Paul by wearing “MP” decal on their helmets.

Paul, who joined the Cowboys in 2018 as an assistant to Mike Woicik, was rushed to the hospital Tuesday morning after experiencing a medical emergency. The team later announced on Wednesday that he died. Paul’s cause of death is unknown. He was 54.

“The loss of a family member is a tragedy, and Markus Paul was a loved and valued member of our family,” Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said in a statement on Wednesday. “He was a pleasant and calming influence in our strength room and throughout The Star.

“His passion for his work and his enthusiasm for life earned him great respect and admiration from all our players and the entire organization. We offer our love and support to his family in this very difficult time. Our hearts are broken for his family and all of the individuals whose lives he touched and made better.”

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy canceled practice on Tuesday after hearing the devastating news of Paul. The Cowboys practiced on Wednesday for only 75 minutes. Prior to joining the Cowboys, Paul spent 11 seasons with the New York Giants as an assistant strength coach. He also played five years in the NFL with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
