The Dallas Cowboys found their new head coach in Mike McCarthy on Monday. Now, they may be on their way to landing a new defensive coordinator.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Cowboys are zeroing in on Mike Nolan for the defensive coordinator role, which would spell the end of the Rod Marinelli era in Dallas.

McCarthy is familiar with Nolan, as McCarthy served as Nolan's offensive coordinator for one year back when Nolan was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in the mid 2000s.

Nolan has been serving as the New Orleans Saints' linebackers coach since 2017.

The 60-year-old got his start as an NFL coach back in 1987, when he took over as special teams coach for the Denver Broncos. He was promoted to Broncos linebackers coach in 1989 and held that position through 1992 before being named defensive coordinator of the New York Giants in 1993.

Since then, Nolan has primarily been a defensive specialist in the NFL, also holding defensive coordinator jobs for the Washington Redskins, New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens, Broncos, Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons.

His last defensive coordinator job was with the Falcons in 2014.

He was the 49ers' head coach for three-and-a-half seasons between 2005 and 2008, going 18-37 before being fired midway through the 2008 campaign.

The Cowboys were pegged as darkhorse Super Bowl contenders by some heading into 2019 and got off to a great start, winning their first three games, but they finished with a record of just 8-8 and missed the playoffs, resulting in Dallas parting ways with head coach Jason Garrett.
