The Dallas Cowboys losing in the playoffs seems as inevitable as death and taxes at this point. Their loss tonight at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers may have been one of their more painful losses yet, even though it was just a Wild Card game.

The Cowboys entered the fourth quarter down 23-7. They put up 10 points and got the ball back with 32 seconds left. They worked their way up to 49ers territory within reach of a Hail Mary attempt. Dallas' last play was a scramble up the middle of the field from Dak Prescott. They didn't have any timeouts left and couldn't spike the ball in time to make the clock stop, ending their season with a 23-17 loss.

This loss made it 11 straight playoff appearances without reaching a conference championship game for the Cowboys, the longest such streak since the NFC and AFC were established.

The Cowboys had the trappings of a dangerous team. They had one of the NFL's best offenses in the regular season and some stellar defensive playmakers. It still wasn't enough to get the job done in the first round of the playoffs at home. Before the game, Prescott addressed the high expectations the team was facing. Dallas completely failed to meet them.

While the Cowboys head home for good this season, the 49ers will prepare to face the first-seeded Green Bay Packers with two of their best defenders, Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, dealing with injuries.
