Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence has been a tremendous asset to the Cowboys defense the last two seasons, and he may soon be getting the deal he deserves. Lawrence was placed under the team's franchise tag for the 2018 season.  Cowboys' vice president Stephen Jones believes the team is much closer to a deal after Lawrence had similar success to his outstanding 2017 season.

According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Jones suggests Lawrence did enough this season to earn a long term deal.

“Certainly DeMarcus has done his part to make us feel more comfortable. He put together now two back-to-back, double-digit sack seasons. Of course he’s a leader by example. Nothing’s changed in terms of my opinion, except for the better.”

Lawrence had a career-best 14.5 sacks in 2017 and did everything he could to duplicate that success in 2018. The Cowboys defensive star had 64 tackles and 10.5 sacks to go along with an interception and two forced fumbles. Lawrence has been healthy for the last two seasons after missing many games in the first few seasons of his career.

The Cowboys would surely need Lawrence to be part of their long-term plans on defense if they choose to extend him an offer. Dallas' young defense is finally beginning to form with linebackers, Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith. It would be wise for the team to keep their best player up front to complement them.

Needless to say, Lawrence is indefinitely deserving of a long-term contract, and the Cowboys should do whatever they can to keep him around.
