After hitting only one of his four last field goal attempts on the season, the Dallas Cowboys announced they are releasing kicker Brett Maher.

Maher missed a 42-yard field goal and booted a kickoff out of bounds in the Cowboys' most recent loss to the Chicago Bears. As a replacement, the Cowboys are signing veteran kicker Kai Forbath who was a free agent.

Maher was the Cowboys' starting kicker for the last two seasons hitting 49 of his 66 field goal attempts (74.2 percent). This season, however, the former Nebraska product was just 5-for-13 on field goals from 40 yards or longer.

Forbath, an eight-year NFL veteran, has spent time with five teams over his career. Most recently, Forbath played one game for the New England Patriots filling in for an injured Nick Folk.

For his career, Forbath has hit 121 of his 141 field goal attempts (85.7 percent) and has hit 78.3 percent of his attempts from 40 yards or longer.

Dallas decided to sign Forbath after a second round of kicker tryouts on Monday. The other potential kickers at the tryout were Nick Rose and University of Washington product Tristan Vizcaino.

Since releasing longtime Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey prior to the 2018 season, Dallas has struggled to find consistency in the kicking game. Bailey, who was the second most accurate kicker in NFL history when he was released, has spent the last two season with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Cowboys certainly aren't the only team to experience kicking struggles this season. The Patriots, Tennessee Titans, San Francisco 49ers, and Atlanta Falcons are all examples of teams that have had multiple kickers this season either due to injury or inconsistency at the position.
