The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to trade undrafted cornerback Charvarius Ward to the Kansas City Chiefs, according to ESPN's Todd Archer and Adam Schefter. The Chiefs are sending offensive lineman Parker Ehinger to Dallas.

Ward showed up to NRG Stadium on Thursday expecting to suit up for the Cowboys' preseason finale against the Houston Texans. Instead, he learned just before the game that he had been dealt to Kansas City, according to David Helman of DallasCowboys.com.

“It was surprising. I thought I played good enough to stick around, but God has got different plans for me,” Ward said following the game. “I’ve just got to take advantage of the opportunity.”

Ward played his college football at Middle Tennessee State. He appeared in the Cowboys' first three preseason games and saw 58 snaps, with seven tackles and two passes defensed to his name. The youngster will add much-needed depth to the Chiefs' secondary.

Ehinger was selected by the Chiefs in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Cincinnati. He appeared in six games over two seasons in Kansas City, and the lineman started five of those games.

With the Cowboys dealing with injuries on their offensive line, adding more depth there makes sense, as noted by executive vice president Stephen Jones earlier this week.

“We're not naïve,” he said. “We know certainly we're out here looking for offensive linemen, interior offensive linemen, as well as the safety position. So, it's no secret. So, if we can find something that makes sense, we want to improve our football team.”

Dallas opens its season next Sunday afternoon against the Carolina Panthers, while Kansas City is on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
