Ready for a shock? Dallas Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said that the team will “obviously” be exercising their fifth-year option on running back Ezekiel Elliott, according to Jon Machota of The Dallas Morning News.
Of course, Elliott is looking for a new deal, but it doesn't seem like the Cowboys are in any rush to make that happen. Dallas has already extended defensive lineman DeMarcus Lawrence and is now apparently working on new contracts with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper, so it seems like Elliott will be the last in line to get a new deal, if he gets one at all.
Elliott is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he led the league with 1,434 rushing yards and added six touchdowns on top of that while averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Plus, he hauled in 77 receptions for 567 yards and three scores en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.
The 23-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State University, was originally selected by the Cowboys with the fourth overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.
He went on to have a tremendous rookie season, racking up an NFL-best 1,631 yards while reaching the end zone 15 times on the ground. He also caught 32 passes for 363 yards and a touchdown, making the Pro Bowl and earning First-Team All-Pro honors as a result.
Elliott then played in just 10 games during his second year due to a six-game suspension. When he was on the field, he rushed for 983 yards and seven scores while snaring 26 balls for 269 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
