The inauspicious 2017 NFL season continues to crumble beneath the feet of the Dallas Cowboys. Despite entering the year with high expectations, the suspension of star running back Ezekiel Elliott incited perhaps the biggest debacle of any team in the league this year.

In the wake of Elliott's absence, many assumed Dallas would turn to a two-headed backfield led by running backs Alfred Morris and Darren McFadden. However, the latter has announced his retirement after recently being waived by the Cowboys, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter:

McFadden's retirement came as a bit of a surprise considering there was speculation that he could potentially get picked up by another team after being cut. However, the veteran running back was a healthy inactive in every game but one this year, so the writing may have been on the wall.

The former Arkansas Razorback enjoyed quite the revitalization with Dallas after suffering through some injury-plagued years with the Oakland Raiders prior to the 2015 NFL season. McFadden finished that year with 1,089 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Unfortunately, that was the last time he saw any meaningful action thanks to the arrival of Zeke. Since that season, he has toted the ball just 25 times for 85 yards, including only one carry for -2 yards in 2017.
