The Dallas Cowboys went on quite a spending spree this offseason in an effort to shore up their key pieces for the long haul. Unfortunately, end DeMarcus Lawrence has failed to provide much bang for their buck after signing a five-year, $105 million contract.

Lawrence has tallied just seven tackles and 2.5 sacks through the first five games of the 2019 NFL season. Although a number of factors have attributed to his slow start, he is not in the business of making excuses, via Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

“Who cares?’‘ Lawrence said. “You care? Be honest. Do you really care? Nobody cares. Nobody cares about your feelings. Nobody cares if you’re hurt. Nobody cares if you’re broke, rich. Nobody cares. Who cares?

“Be you. Go to work. Peace.”

It is encouraging to see that Lawrence is doing what he can to take responsibility for his underwhelming production thus far in the season. The NFL is as unforgiving as a sport there is and the numbers will always be used as ammo for criticism regardless of the circumstances, especially for a player that was not shy about expressing his confidence during the offseason.

This could be why Lawrence is simply putting the onus on himself to find a way to take his play to the next level.

While most of the focus will be on his pass rush, it is the Cowboys' run defense that needs to be improved after being gashed by the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints on the ground in recent weeks.
