Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence could have opted to hold out and exert more leverage to get a long-term contract this offseason like what many other stars are doing at the moment. But instead of going that route, Lawrence chose to sign his franchise tender without much hesitation.

So why did Lawrence do what he did? He has a simple reason:

“Cause I’m not everybody else,” Lawrence said per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. “I’m DeMarcus. DeMarcus does what DeMarcus want to do. … I know how to play the [business] game, too. I might not play the game just the way everybody else play their game, but I know if I keep putting in that work and do what I need to do on the field, they’re going to sign me, so I’m not really worried about it.”

Lawrence, 26, is coming off a breakout season as he put up 14.5 sacks in 2017. That’s after he had just nine in his first three seasons in the league. Lawrence is set to earn a cool $17 million under the tag this season, but the Cowboys are still working on getting him an extension.

Lawrence has a somewhat concerning injury history after already undergoing multiple back surgeries. So while he's going to get $17 million for this year, he is still taking a bit of risk every time he steps on the field without a long-term deal.

But Lawrence clearly doesn’t seem to be worrying too much about that. Instead, he’s just focusing on getting better on his job and is confident everything will work out just fine for him in the end.
