Former Dallas Cowboys icon Emmitt Smith has chimed in on the current Dak Prescott contract situation.

The three-time Super Bowl-winning running back spoke to 105.3 The Fan in Dallas and offered his thoughts on how the negotiations between the Cowboys and their star quarterback would go as far as reaching an agreement.

“If you understand the business of leverage, when you have leverage then you try to set the rules,” Smith said on 105.3 The Fan. “And the only way you fight leverage is you fight it by establishing your ground and I think at some point this stuff will subside and it’s not that important right now. … It’s important to press people that need something to talk about because you don’t have much to talk about because we don’t have camps and minicamps and so forth. And now we’re talking about pandemic left and right, 24-7, seven days a week, however you look at it. So you look for something to discuss, but as far as the players go, Dak is not worried whether or not he’s going to get signed. I’m not even concerned. I believe he will get it done. And I believe the Cowboys will get it done because we don’t have room to be playing games or playing chicken.”

The Cowboys placed the franchise tag on Prescott last March. After signing former Cincinnati Bengals signal-caller Andy Dalton to a one-year deal, speculations rose as far as whether the move is being used as leverage by the Cowboys for their contract talks. As the negotiations stalls, there's no telling when, or if, both parties will reach a deal.

Prescott will make north of $30 million with the tag, but is still looking to be locked up in a long term deal. If Emmitt Smith is right about how the Cowboys work, then it should be a matter of time before an accord between Dallas and Prescott will be reached.
