There have been rumors swirling about the Dallas Cowboys potentially taking a running back in the 2019 NFL Draft. Pro Football Hall of Fame running back and Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith does not think this would be the right approach for them.

The Cowboys do not have much depth behind Elliott in the backfield.

According to Mark Lane of WFAA, Smith still feels their picks would be better used by addressing other notable voids on the roster:

“I think they could use that pick to solidify other positions on that football field whether it’s defense or offensive line or another wide receiver or something of that nature,” Smith said. “There are other ways that they could utilize that pick.”

There is certainly plenty o truth to Smith's comments. The Cowboys have utilized Elliott as their workhorse back ever since he arrived as a rookie. There is no question he has done a sensational job carrying the load as the focal point of their offense.

Considering his stronghold on the touches out of the backfield, Dallas may want to use their picks to help shore up some weaknesses on their depth chart.

Although there are clear benefits taking another position in the draft, it is clear that Smith is doing what he can to ensure Elliott remains as the Cowboys' bell-cow back for as long as possible.

Dallas has exercised the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, however, he has made it clear that he hopes to sign a long-term deal in the near future.

Using a second or third-rounder on another running back could raise plenty of speculation regarding Dallas' plans for the backfield.
