Dallas Cowboys recently extended running back Ezekiel Elliott is expected to get 20-25 reps in week one against the New York Giants according to Jane Slater of NFL Network.

Backing up Elliott will be Tony Pollard and fullback Jamize Olawale will probably play on third down as a blocking back.

When Cowboys coach Jason Garrett was asked about Elliott's status for Week 1, he didn't want to give too much away and said it would depend on how he looked during practice.

“We anticipate him practicing, and we’ll see how he does,” Garrett said via Pro Football Talk. “He’ll go through the dynamic warmup and the individual, and we’ll see how he’s responding. He’s in very good shape. He looks good, but he hasn’t been practicing with pro football players. So we’ll just see how he fits back in, but he’s a quick study; he’s a smart guy; he has an excellent football IQ. Se we’ll see where he is and adjust accordingly as we go.”

Pollard has shown flashes of a good running back, but he isn't anywhere close to the talent level of Elliott, and he also has never been the every-down back for a season. He is a better change of pace back, and now with Elliott back, that is the role Pollard can go back to.

Garrett is coaching for his job this season and is excited to get his best player back on the field.

“Zeke’s been a big part of our team,” Garrett said. “He’s so well respected by everybody in our organization and a really important player for us. So it’s great to get him back in here.”
