First-year Dallas Cowboy Gerald McCoy is calling out owner Jerry Jones.

In an Instagram Live video Thursday, McCoy was discussing his support for making Juneteenth an official national holiday. Juneteenth is June 19th, which is the anniversary of the official ending of slavery when Union General Gordon Granger read orders in 1865 in Galveston, Texas, that all slaves were free. This movement has gained momentum in recent weeks following the death of George Floyd and the subsequent protests across the country.

In his Instagram video, he discussed how he is helping to do his part and bring awareness to this date. While speaking about Juneteenth, he brought up how his current team, the Cowboys, can help in the movement for black equality.

Via Todd Archer of ESPN:

“You have the players, who have their own brand, but we're all under the umbrella of the Dallas Cowboys,” McCoy said. “The Dallas Cowboys are the most recognized franchise in the world. They can get behind it, whether it's the players or just being in the movement, period, and showing their support. It would be great to hear a statement from the Cowboys, great to hear a statement from Jerry Jones in support of everything that's going on. Will that get me in trouble saying that? I don't know, but the truth is it needs to be said. The problem is people are afraid to have the conversations.”

This is a bold statement from the first year Cowboy, especially considering comments that Jones have made in the past in regards to players kneeling for the National Anthem. The tide seems to be changing now, however, and now is the time for the Cowboys and Jerry Jones to make a statement in support of their players and to acknowledge they were wrong in 2017.

With a first-year player like McCoy putting his future on the line to support what he feels is right, this might galvanize more Cowboys to speak up and force Jones' hand — much like the stars of the NFL forced commissioner Roger Goodell to make a statement against racism.
