After the Dallas Cowboys opened their preseason up with a 17-9 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the team was quick to note that it had a lot of work left to do. As they prepare for their second game of the preseason, head coach Jason Garrett says that the team still has a lot to do in order to get better.

Speaking to reporters after their preseason loss via Cowboys Wire, Garrett was honest in his review of the team.

“It’s a different unit, obviously,” he told the media. “A few of our starting players aren’t here; we have a new coordinator. So I don’t know that it’s instructive to go back and make those comparisons. I think what you have to do is you have to evaluate this team, right now, and what we need to do to get better. And trust me, there are plenty of things we need to do to get better.”

Garrett was honest in noting that some of the Cowboys starters didn’t play, the team still doesn’t want to see many of the issues it did from any unit.

The Cowboys made it into the red zone four times against the 49ers, but were unable to convert on any of their attempts. Bret Maher – the kicker for the Cowboys – also missed a field goal while contributing all 9 of the Cowboys points.

While the likes of Dak Prescott (for more than four passes), Ezekiel Elliot, and Amari Cooper probably would have helped the Cowboys out, the team cannot just count on its first-string players to do well. Football is a team sport, and even those low in the depth chart should be looking to make splashes while on the field.

Thankfully for the Cowboys, they’ll have three more preseason games to tune things up before the regular season starts.
