The NFL has begun its countdown of the top 100 players in league history by position. Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is close to making the final cut.

The NFL announced Witten is among the finalists for tight ends:

This is quite an honor for Witten and there is no question that he is certainly deserving of the recognition considering all that he has managed to accomplish throughout his career. It is safe to say that he will be going up against some stiff competition if he hopes to make it all the way through.

Witten initially arrived in Dallas as a third-round pick in the 2003 NFL Draft and emerged as an integral member of the offense in just his second year. It was not long before he became a cornerstone of their passing game and managed to produce some all-time numbers because of it.

Witten had already pieced together a Hall of Fame resume prior to his first retirement. He earned 11 trips to the Pro Bowl and was named a four-time All-Pro. The veteran is also one of the most decorated player in Cowboys history with franchise records for most career receptions, yards, and games played.

Witten even opted to take a year off from football to make the transition to the broadcast booth. Of course, he could not stay away for long after returning to help this team compete for a Super Bowl. Although it may seem far-fetched at this point, there is still no debating his status as one of the best tight ends in NFL history.
