The Dallas Cowboys are heading into a new era of football in 2020 with new head coach Mike McCarthy in and Jason Garrett no longer patrolling the sidelines. While the change of coaches has already occurred, there are still questions about what the roster will look like. Jason Witten is one player who is currently undecided about his playing status for next season.

Calvin Watkins of Dallas News shared on Twitter that McCarthy has spoken to Witten about his future in the NFL and there is no clear answer to that question.

Witten came out retirement last offseason to re-join the Cowboys in hopes of making a Super Bowl run. That did not end up happening, as Dallas ended up missing the playoffs. His return may very well hinge upon McCarthy's ability to sell him on the team competing for a postseason spot.

During the 2019 season with the Cowboys, Witten ended up catching 63 passes for 529 yards and four touchdowns. It wasn't a huge statistical season, but it showed that Witten is still capable of making an impact.

Dallas would love to have the veteran tight end back for one more season. He provides excellent leadership and is a top-notch security blanket for quarterback Dak Prescott. If he doesn't choose to return, however, the Cowboys will need to figure something out at the tight end position.

Expect to hear more news about Witten and his future in the coming weeks. The NFL season is almost over and teams will be looking to make necessary roster moves soon after that.
