Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith's career got off to a late start after he spent his rookie year dealing with a devastating knee injury. Fortunately, his health is looking up after playing in all 16 games in the 2017 season.

As a result, Smith may be looking for a larger role on defense this time around. He even said he feels “substantially better” going into the offseason during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan, via the Dallas Morning News:

“It showed on the field, week by week my growth, my comfort and just being able to play the position again,” Smith said. “I’m prepared and I’m ready to tackle even more this year. It’s going to be a great year.”

Although Smith is well-aware of his versatile skill set, he admitted that he would like to log in more time at middle linebacker.

“Honestly, I’m not a general manager or anything like that,” Smith said. “I don’t know anything about playing the SAM and things like that. But I know last year I played MIKE linebacker, and I grew each week. And I’m ready to tackle even more. Playing side by side next to Sean Lee, I’m excited.”

“Obviously I can do a lot, so being able to use me as a [pass] rusher as well, I mean, I’m going to do what the coaches tell me to do, and I’m going to achieve greatness.”

Many were surprised to see that the Cowboys took Smith with the 34th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. While he may have been one of the best defensive prospects in college that year, his draft stock fell drastically after he tore his ACL and LCL in the season finale of his junior year at Notre Dame.

Smith played well in his first season of action, recording 81 tackles, two forced fumbles, and a sack. He was even asked to fill in at MIKE backer following the injury to Sean Lee. That said, do not be surprised to see Smith flash some of the versatility that once made him one of the most electrifying players in college football.
