Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith has spent the bulk of his NFL career trying to compensate for his past injuries. Fortunately, that is no longer the case.

Smith spent the 2017 NFL season wearing an ankle brace due to drop foot. However, according to Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Star-Telegram, he is starting to feel like his old self again after finally ditching the brace:

“Getting that flexion back is going to help tremendously … speed, quickness, explosiveness,” Smith said. “I have been feeling great. Everything is about getting back to 100 percent. Every day I am improving.”

It goes without saying that Smith's career has gotten off to a rough start following his days as a standout at Notre Dame. He was projected as a bonafide first-rounder and arguably the best defensive player in the draft during his junior year.

Unfortunately, the devastating knee injury he suffered that year not only killed his draft stock but has had lingering effects on his physical health up until now.

Smith missed his entire rookie season while rehabbing the injury. He was able to make his return for the 2017 campaign and showed plenty of promise. He finished the year with 81 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles. While his production was a bit modest, Smith was just happy to be back out on the field again.

Now it appears he is ready to take his game to the next level. Needless to say, the Cowboys will need all the help they can get this year if they are to meet the team's lofty expectations.
