Jaylon Smith and the Dallas Cowboys have gotten off to a rough start to the 2018 NFL season. It has been rough especially on the offensive side of the football. Dak Prescott and the offense have been unable to get things going, which has resulted in the Cowboys having a 1-2 record at this point in the season.

Defensively, the Cowboys have been getting the job done. Dallas is ranked No. 3 in total defense by ESPN. That ranking shows just how good they have been, even though they haven't received much hype.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys, Sean Lee will be forced to miss a few weeks due to injury. In his place, however, Jaylon Smith is prepared to step up and help lead the defense.

Smith talked about just that in an interview with Stefan Stevenson of the Star-Telegram.

“I’m a leader at heart. It’s not something I have to try hard to do. My role is to set the defense, set the tempo. I prepare for it, being a natural born leader myself. I have great relationships with all of the guys.”

Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli talked more about Smith and what he brings to the field. He also talked about his recovery from a gruesome knee injury.

“Running in a straight line last year he was fast. And he knows what he’s doing now. When you don’t it’s hard to play with great speed. Jaylon has a couple of years under his belt and he’s been playing well. We have a lot of confidence in [rookie Leighton Vander Esch] coming in. We like the men we’ve got.”

Dallas needs Smith to pick up some of the slack that will be left from Lee being out. Smith has recorded 22 tackles to go along with two sacks. At 23 years old, it's time for Smith to show just how much leadership he is capable of shouldering for the Cowboys.

Expect to see him live up to the hype and come through with a big few weeks to help ease the pain of losing Lee. Smith has star talent and is ready to show that to the rest of the NFL.
