After months of little to no communication, the Dallas Cowboys met with the agent of Dak Prescott on Wednesday. Despite it being a positive sign in contract talks, Jerry Jones opened up about the details of the meeting with Prescott's agent.

“Don’t make anything of that, one way or another,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Thursday, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “That’s not what counts. [What counts is] when you decide it’s time to make it work.”

On Thursday, all 32 teams in the NFL were able to begin utilizing their franchise tags. For the Cowboys, they would ideally like to get a long-term deal in place with Prescott. However, if they can't get a deal done ahead of the franchise-tag deadline on March 12, it's likely that they use the tag on Prescott.

The meeting between Prescott's agent and the Cowboys is crucial to getting a contract in place. Prior to the meeting, Dallas and Prescott's representatives haven't communicated about a contract since September.

After failing to agree on an extension before the 2019 season, Prescott bet on himself to increase his value. Conversely, Prescott would proceed to throw for a career-best 4,902 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

As nice as it was to speak to Prescott's agent, Jones understands that there are still kinks to work out before a deal is reached. In the event that Prescott doesn't get a deal before March 18, he would become an unrestricted free agent. Whether it's by way of the franchise tag or a long-term deal, Jones intends to have Prescott as his quarterback in 2020.
