There has been a lot of talks the last couple of years if someday Sean Payton could take over for Jason Garrett and although the talk has been all over the media, evidently Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hasn't heard about it.

Payton was coaching in the final year of his deal and at one point was a Cowboys assistant, so it made sense before he agreed to a contract extension with the New Orleans Saints that he could be coaching again in Dallas.

Jones said on Sunday that it only made sense that the Saints extended him because he has been such a huge part of his organization.

“I know this: I think a lot of that organization, Mickey [Loomis] and everybody involved there, Ms. [Gayle] Benson,” Jones said Sunday via Pro Football Talk. “Nothing surprising about that. They recognize everything that Sean is about positively, which is what he’s about. Doesn’t surprise me at all that they want to keep him there. He’s a big part of the fabric of New Orleans.”

When asked about the rumors that were swirling about Payton joining the Cowboys, Jones had a straightforward answer.

“What rumors?” Jones said, smiling.

With Payton extended, it will be interesting to see if that gives Garrett a longer leash. To get a contract extension, he is still probably going to need to have success in the playoffs, but maybe Jones will be more likely to extend him now that his number one candidate to replace him is off the board.
