Through three games, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott leads the NFL in passing yards (1,188) and completions (96) with a 98.5 QB rating.

Yet, the team is 1-2, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, evidently, still doesn't believe Prescott is on the same tier as Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes II, Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, nor former Dallas QB, Tony Romo.

Either that or Jerry is just playing some hardball.

Jones made an appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday morning, and was asked if he sees a “major gap” between the Cowboys and the Chiefs, who smoked the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football to move to 4-0 on the season:

“Yes. I see a team that is clicking. They're the Super Bowl champs, and they look like they got better … And, obviously, with their quarterback, who is, I think, at the highest level right now because, frankly, as much as just as his natural ability to make plays, his mobility. This guy's very quick and elusive and can get in and out of situations with his feet and buy time.”

The Cowboys owner then compared Mahomes to Wilson, who lit up the Dallas defense for 5 TDs in Seattle's 38-31 Week 3 win. The owner then conveniently contrasted Wilson and Mahomes' greatness to the shortcomings of Prescott:

“The quarterback we played Sunday is of that kind of nature: he has great ability to get in and out, and then make the play,” Jones said about Wilson. “That play Dak made at the end of the game that got intercepted — well, the result of Dak's ability that let him get that ball off was really great and outstanding. Well, these guys have that ability, a lot. They are very quick footed, and they have the unique ability to possibly take their eyes away from the field for a minute and then immediately focus back and see. Romo had that…So those are things that show up, and that's what you want. These guys, they're buying time with their feet, they're buying time with their instincts and their feet.”

Prescott thew for 472 yards on 37-for-57 passing and 3 TDs in the thriller, but also tossed two interceptions and lost a fumble. On the Cowboys final snap, he impressively evaded a sack before throwing an end-zone interception on a desperation heave.

Jones placing Prescott on a level below Wilson and Mahomes (and Romo) is straight out the owner's playbook of negotiating through the media, a tactic he often deploys.

Prescott is seeking a long-term extension from Dallas that pays him closer to the range of Wilson, who earns about $35 million per season. Prescott rejected Dallas' four-year, $110 million offer — about equal to the contract of Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff — and is playing the 2020 season on a $31.4 million tender.
