The Dallas Cowboys placed their franchise tag on Dak Prescott earlier this offseason, dragging out the contract dispute between both sides. Even though it's viewed in a bad light, Kirk Cousins advised Prescott that the ‘franchise tag can be your friend'.

Since the franchise tag was created, there's been a bad moniker that is associated with it. If a player receives the dreaded franchise tag, the majority of the time they feel underappreciated and disrespected. However, that isn't how Cousins views the franchise tag.

Cousins, who began his career with the Washington Redskins, is more than familiar with the franchise tag. After his rookie deal with the Redskins expired in 2016, Cousins was given the franchise tag. Then, the year after, Washington placed the franchise tag on him for the second consecutive season.

Altogether, in the two franchise tags he received, Cousins earned a total of over $43 million. While he didn't end up signing a long-term deal with the Redskins, he finally garnered one with the Minnesota Vikings in 2018. As a matter of fact, early in free agency, he signed his second extension with the Vikings.

So what does this mean for Prescott and the Cowboys? Without a doubt, Prescott isn't going to be upset with the fact that he'll make $31.4 million under the tag next season.

Despite having the tag placed on him, Prescott would undoubtedly prefer to have a long-term deal in place in the near future. Until that happens, Cousins thinks that Prescott shouldn't be disappointed in the tag and instead, he should use it to propel himself toward a multi-year contract.
