Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup is undergoing surgery soon to repair his torn left ACL.

Gallup sustained the injury in Week 17 against the Arizona Cardinals and had been sidelined ever since, missing their Week 18 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles and their Wild Card round showdown with the San Francisco 49ers.

The surgery is a critical step in Gallup's recovery, and doing it early is critical to get him back to game shape and ready to play before the 2022 season. According to Dallas Morning News, there is some “optimism” that he'll be able to get back in time as the new campaign begins.

Gallup is scheduled to undergo knee surgery next Thursday with Cowboys head team physician Dr. Dan Cooper, a source said. Optimism surrounds Gallup’s outlook to be ready for the start of the 2022 regular season. His contract is scheduled to expire on March 16.

More than five weeks between an ACL tear and reconstructive surgery may land on the lengthier side, but a weekslong delay is medically standard. This wait period allows for symptoms like swelling to improve, which studies have shown to facilitate post-operation rehabilitation.

Michael Gallup had been a critical weapon for Dallas. While it is unknown if he'll return to the Cowboys considering their salary situation with Amari Cooper, it will be beneficial for him and his free agency to get back sooner rather than later.

In the nine games (eight starts) he had with the Cowboys throughout 2021, he registered two touchdowns and tallied 445 yards on 35 receptions. At just 25 years old, he has yet to enter his prime and could be a big weapon for Dallas or whichever team signs him in free agency.
