As it stands, Dak Prescott will be a free agent in March. However, the presumption is that it won't happen. The Dallas Cowboys will find a way to extend their presumed franchise quarterback, whether that be a long term deal or a franchise tag.

Prescott's second coach of his NFL career makes it clear that the Cowboys' future success will depend on his abilities. Mike McCarthy, in his introductory press conference, stated that Dallas would build around him.

“He’s a great one… You’re going to be able to run the whole offense and then some. Our offensive system will be built around making the quarterback successful,” McCarthy told reporters, via Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

McCarthy spent his entire head coaching career with Aaron Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers. His abilities as a developmental coach for quarterbacks helped Rodgers become one of the best passers in NFL history.

McCarthy also previously coached with the Kansas City Chiefs and Brett Favre with the Packers. Both, and Rodgers, are amongst the best in NFL history as quarterbacks.

Though the Cowboys are coming off of a failure of a campaign, Prescott enjoyed a solid season. He threw for 4,902 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on a 65.1% completion rate. His 99.7 passer rating was far above league average and the second-highest mark of his career, behind 2016, when he won Offensive Rookie of the Year.

For the Cowboys, the hope is that McCarthy will help Prescott grow while he nears his turn to get a gaudy contract extension.
