Rex Ryan made headlines on Friday for an extremely unusual reason, calling Amari Cooper of the Dallas Cowboys a ‘turd.' After making the questionable comment, Ryan issued an apology to Cooper and shared his regret for saying what he did.

The instance of Ryan calling Cooper a turd came early on Friday morning during Get Up, the morning show on ESPN. Then, hours after putting down Cooper, Ryan extended an apology to the Cowboys wide receiver. However, the former NFL head coach stood by his belief that Cooper was overpaid this offseason.

Near the beginning of free agency, there was some doubt that Dallas would be able to come to an agreement with Cooper. But after both sides had some conversations, Cooper signed a five-year, $100 million contract. As a result, Cooper is now one of the highest-paid players at his position.

For comparison, last offseason, the New Orleans Saints gave Michael Thomas the same deal that Cooper received. Of course, Thomas is coming off of a season where he set the single-season record for receptions in 2019.

While the Cowboys are ecstatic to have Cooper back, Ryan seems less than interested in the price they paid to retain him. In his first 25 games in Dallas, Cooper has totaled 132 receptions, 1,914 yards, and 14 touchdowns.

Ryan was quick to point out that he believes Cooper has the traits to be a talented receiver. At the same time, Ryan exclaimed that the Alabama product tends to falter against the best cornerbacks in the NFL. Even though Ryan apologized, it's fair to think that he and Cooper won't be friends any time soon.
