The Dallas Cowboys have been without the services of Pro Bowl linebacker Sean Lee for the last three straight games due to a hamstring injury.

Lee looks to be making some progress from the ailment as he returned to the practice field on Wednesday for the first time since it occurred, according to Todd Archer of ESPN.

This is a significant step forward for Lee in his recovery from the hamstring injury that has been an issue over the last few weeks that left the Cowboys without one of the core defensive pieces. However, this has seen linebackers Jaylon Smith and rookie Leighton Vander Esch each step up with their play while providing much-needed stability to that part of the defense. The Cowboys also currently rank second in the league allowing just 17.2 points per game.

Throughout much of his career, he has been a highly influential part of the defense that has looked markedly different whenever he has been sidelined. It hasn’t been so much the case this year due to the presence of Smith and Vander Esch while Dallas a highly formidable pass rush that ranks fifth in the league with 18 sacks and ninth overall in the league. Lee’s return provides another huge boost to their front seven that has been among the most stout this season. He has been the quarterback of the defense that has been one of their most valuable players on the team. Dallas has a Week 7 matchup lined up on the road against the Washington Redskins. This is a crucial divisional matchup that could put them atop of the NFC East standings.

If he’s unable to give it a go, the Cowboys will continue to lean on Smith and Vander Esch to continue to be the primary contributors at the linebacker position.
