The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott remain at a standstill in contract talks this offseason. While fans continue to wonder what the hold up is, Stephen Jones revealed why Prescott hasn't been signed to a long-term deal.

Since before the 2019 season, Prescott has been seeking an extension from the Cowboys. However, both sides have been unable to reach an agreement on a set price for the former fourth-round pick.

Due to their inability to get a deal done, the Cowboys were inclined to place their franchise tag on Prescott prior to free agency. With Prescott receiving the franchise tag, Dallas has until July 15 to negotiate a long-term deal with him.

Even though there are still two months until that deadline, there hasn't been much progress made. While Prescott hopes to receive a contract makes him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, the Cowboys seem reluctant to give him that.

Jones points to the analytics of lucratively paid quarterbacks as the reason why Prescott doesn't have an extension in place. That reasoning would make a bit more sense if the Cowboys didn't already hand out expensive contracts to Ezekiel Elliott and Amari Cooper.

The quarterback position is undoubtedly the most important position, which has been proven year after year. On the other hand, signing running backs and wide receivers has been proven not to be conducive to winning.

It's evident that the Cowboys have a price in mind when it comes to Prescott's next contract. With that being said, the extensions for Elliott and Cooper could prevent Dallas from being able to extend Prescott.
