The Dallas Cowboys exercised the fifth-year option for Ezekiel Elliott which will keep him on the team through 202o but the team still hasn't gotten a long term deal done yet.

According to Stephen Jones, it's still a priority that the two sides get a deal done, but he doesn't have a timetable at hits point for when it will get done.

“I think those [contract extensions] are all a work in progress,” Jones told Pro Football Talk on Friday. “Certainly we've got a couple years there with Zeke to get that done. We certainly want to get him done. He's the straw, if you will, that stirs our drink. He's a key part of what we're about.

“Those things take time to get done. They don't happen over night. Certainly he is a priority in terms of ultimately getting him signed. But there hasn't really been a timetable put on this.”

It seems at some point a deal is going to get done but the bigger question is how much will Elliott get in the extension. Todd Gurley signed a four-year contract worth $45 million guaranteed that can be worth as much as $60 million.

That is still the largest contract ever given to a running back, but when Elliott and the Cowboys sit down for their discussions it feels like that will just be a starting point. Elliott will probably be looking for more guaranteed money and a contract that could pay him more based on performance over the years of the deal.
