The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott have been at a standoff since last offseason regarding a contract, with the franchise tag becoming a probable reality. While speaking about the situation, Troy Aikman warns Dallas about placing the franchise tag on Prescott.

“I know [Cowboys owner] Jerry [Jones] has talked about wanting to sign him,” Aikman said on SiriusXM NFL Radio, via NFL.com. “To me it is a no-brainer, you’re right. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened. I’d hate to think what might happen or how Dak might feel if they end up going the franchise tag route. I just don’t think that’s gonna be in the best interest of all parties. Ultimately, I don’t think it’s in the best interest of the Cowboys and it could have damaging effects in my opinion. I’m hoping they get a deal done.”

Last offseason, Prescott expressed his desire to receive a long-term extension from the Cowboys. Despite his request, Dallas chose to make Ezekiel Elliott the highest-paid running back in the NFL.

As a result, Prescott chose to bet on himself in 2019 and by doing so, he's increased his value on the market. Of course, the Cowboys would prefer to have a multi-year contract in place with Prescott before March 16; the final day for teams to use their franchise tag.

But if neither side can agree on terms for a new deal, the Cowboys could be inclined to use their franchise tag on Prescott. Though, by tagging him, Prescott could choose to holdout or as Aikman said, “it could have damaging effects”. In the event that Dallas franchise tags Prescott, this situation could get even hairier as the offseason progresses.
