The Dallas Cowboys' 2017 NFL season was a disappointment by all accounts. However, perhaps the most frustrating aspect was the obvious lack of chemistry between quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Dez Bryant.

As a result, there have been rumors that the Cowboys could potentially part ways with the star wideout. According to ESPN's Todd Archer, Dallas may be willing axe Bryant with the hope of creating some cap space for the offseason:

The Cowboys will release the franchise's all-time leader in touchdown catches and gain $8.5 million in salary-cap space. Stephen Jones' recent comments about Bryant's sideline antics being a distraction and needing to look at the contract seem to be setting the stage for the parting. It is possible the Cowboys could offer Bryant a pay cut, but that's not something they did with DeMarcus Ware — the franchise leader in sacks — after the 2013 season. They did not have a replacement for Ware when they made the move then, and they don't have a replacement for Bryant now, but they can use free agency and/or the draft to add a receiver to do what Bryant has done the past three seasons.

It still may come as a bit of a surprise to hear such talk about the franchise's all-time touchdown receptions leader. However, it is clear the distractions that come with his boisterous persona have started to outweigh his performance on the field. Bryant endured the worst year of his career in seasons where he managed to play in 15 or more games, recording 69 receptions for 838 yards and six touchdowns.

There are still those like Cowboys legend Michael Irvin who feel it would be a mistake to let the three-time Pro Bowler go without a solid backup No. 1 receiver. There are very few players with comparable talent to Bryant set to hit the market this offseason, not to mention the upcoming 2018 NFL Draft.
