Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has reportedly tried to convince retired tight end Jason Witten to return to the franchise this season.

Witten is currently the lead analyst in the Monday Night Football broadcast booth after announcing his retirement following the 2017 season.

However, with the Cowboys in a position to return to the playoffs, it appears that Garrett has put considerable effort into trying to lure the 11-time Pro Bowl selection back to the team that he spent his entire career with.

From ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter:

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has made multiple attempts this season to get former Dallas tight end Jason Witten to come out of retirement and help the Cowboys in their postseason push, league sources told ESPN.

Witten has resisted those overtures, some of which came in recent weeks, as tempting as it might have been to help his former team, sources said.

Witten was obviously one of the most reliable tight ends in the NFL during his playing career, and there's little doubt that he could probably step back on the field and make an impact for a Dallas team that needs more production at that position.

But it's undoubtedly a long shot at this point that Witten actually leaves the booth to return to the team, even if it would help the Cowboys have a better shot at navigating the stretch run of the season.

Garrett and company will prepare for another important matchup on Sunday when they host the Philadephia Eagles.
