The 2019 season will be a critical one for the Dallas Cowboys. Jason Garrett ultimately ended up saving his job last year with a strong close to the season, but he'll be on the hot seat once again this year. Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones said Garrett's “back is against the wall right now,” just like everybody else in Dallas', per Charean Williams of ProFootballTalk.com.

Jones also said “no one thinks more of him than we do,” but his comments seemed to confirm that Garrett will be on a relatively short leash. Jones' father and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said last month the team was fine with not extending Garrett and having him head into 2019 as a lame duck coach with his contract set to expire. Always seemingly on the verge of being fired, Garrett has a knack for surviving through adversity.

Garrett was coaching for his job all last year and ended up prevailing by winning the NFC East and winning a playoff game. He beat the Seahawks in the Wild Card round but Dallas then lost to the Rams in the Divisional round, and questions continued to swirl about Garrett's offense. Ultimately, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan was let go in a major shakeup.

Garrett is no stranger to this kind of rampant speculation about his job status. He was a lame duck in 2014 and ended up going 12-4 and winning the division, which earned him the five-year extension which is now about to run out.

The defense blossomed into one of the best in the league last year, but the Cowboys' offense again received a ton of criticism for lacking creativity. Garrett promoted quarterbacks coach Kellen Moore to offensive coordinator, and it's unlikely the offense will look too much different next season. If the team doesn't make it back to the playoffs, Garrett very well could be out of a job at this time next year.
