Marvel's Avengers developers Crystal Dynamics announced changes to its RPG that completely polarized the player base. Players will now find it more tedious to level up their favorite heroes. Crystal Dynamics claims that making XP progression more difficult benefits the game as a whole. The changes come alongside the release of the latest DLC Character on March 18th. Hawkeye's entry into Marvel's Avengers meant to increase player count for the ailing game but the accompanying XP changes could well have the opposite effect. Additionally, Crystal Dynamic also made changes to how random cosmetic drops function.

AVENGERS GRIND ASSEMBLE

The developers went into the nitty-gritty details of the upcoming changes for Marvel's Avengers in a blog post. They claim the increased XP difficulty makes for a more “challenging” experience. The new XP curve starts at around level 25, making it more difficult to reach higher levels.

“The current XP “curve” isn’t really a curve at all. In most RPGs, the amount of XP you need to level up increases as you gain levels in a curve, but our system is a straight line. This has led to pacing issues, such as skill points currently being rewarded too fast, which may be confusing and overwhelming to newer players. We want each decision to invest in a skill or Heroic to be more meaningful.”

Players on the official Subreddit noted that the game only becomes enjoyable once heroes reach level 50. There's a very clear disconnect between player expectation and developer vision. It remains unclear which side, if any, benefits from the incoming changes to Marvel's Avengers.

The decision to remove players ability to randomly receive certain cosmetic items also drew criticism. The announcement stated that the drop changes were implemented with the goal of “providing more player agency and clarity about how to obtain them by removing randomness from the process.”

Overall, the changes set to take over Marvel's Avengers feel like nothing more than cheap attempts to extend the game's playability. The developers claim the changes will bring more balance to the entire experience but these changes aren't anything new. We'll all find out soon whether these changes turn out to improve anything for Marvel's Avengers.
