The Atlanta Braves eviscerated the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night by a final score of 10-0. The Braves finished with 18 hits to the Cubs’ five, and Freddie Freeman finished with a sterling line of 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. The lone out Freeman made? A strikeout—at the hands of Cubs everyday first baseman Anthony Rizzo in the seventh inning.

That’s right, the reigning NL MVP, one of the greatest Braves players since Chipper Jones roamed the hot corner, was fanned by a position player, who had only pitched to one batter in his career prior to tonight’s game (via Bleacher Report).

The Cubs were completely out of this contest right from the start, as they trailed 6-0 after only the second inning following a barrage of dingers. As such, Rizzo was actually one of a whopping three position players that pitched in the game.

Rizzo, a three-time All-Star, was the first out of the gate followed by third baseman Matt Duffy, who pitched to one batter. Eric Sogard, a second baseman who pinch-hit for the Cubs, actually completed a full inning, giving up two hits but not allowing an earned run.

With the victory, the Cubs improved to 10-14, but remain last in the NL Central. But of course, it’s still early days, and they’re only four games back of the Milwaukee Brewers, who lead the division with a 14-10 record.

Anthony Rizzo has been scuffling somewhat this season, but perhaps his impressive pitching acumen against one of his good friends will inspire him for the rest of the season.
