The Chicago Cubs are rumored to be trying to slash payroll, meaning that they could potentially trade off some of their star players this offseason.

There are already rumors swirling around third baseman Kris Bryant, and first baseman Anthony Rizzo may not be far behind.

As a matter of fact, ESPN analyst Alden Gonzalez is predicting that the Cubs will end up trading Rizzo for a “bounty of prospects” during the MLB Winter Meetings.

This would not be the first time that someone has brought up the possibility of Chicago dealing Rizzo this offseason, as ESPN's Jeff Passan kicked around the idea last week, saying the Cubs are “manic” and motivated” to make trades.

Passan did qualify, however, that Rizzo is probably the least likely Cubs star to get dealt.

Rizzo is coming off of a 2019 campaign in which he slashed .293/.405/.520 with 27 home runs and 94 RBI over 613 plate appearances.

The 30-year-old was originally selected by the Boston Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2007 MLB Draft, but never actually played a game for the Red Sox before being dealt to the San Diego Padres in December 2010.

Rizzo made his big-league debut with the Padres in 2011, playing in 49 games. That ensuing offseason, San Diego traded him to Chicago, and by 2013, he was a full-time starter for the Cubs.

The Fort Lauderdale native has made three All-Star appearances and also has three Gold Gloves to his name. He owns a career slash line of .273/.373/.488 with 218 long balls across 5,173 trips to the dish.
