The Chicago Cubs have had an incredibly disappointing offseason thus far. Rumors have been swirling that they are looking to swing a big trade, with names like Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras being at the forefront of those discussions. Unfortunately for the Cubs, nothing has come to fruition and they are still stuck in the middle of nowhere without any money to work with.

Nicholas Castellanos is one free agent that the Cubs were rumored to be hoping to retain entering the offseason. They haven't been mentioned in many rumors, but they apparently still haven't given up on that hope.

According to a report from Jon Morosi of the MLB Network, the Cubs are still “in the mix” when it comes to Castellanos. He did report that the Texans Rangers are currently the front-runner to sign Castellanos as they look to land a big bat this offseason.

Simply hearing that the Cubs are still trying to bring Castellanos back will give the fans in Chicago some hope. Theo Epstein has spent all of the money the franchise had to offer and he likely won't be able to afford to keep most of the team's talent around. Trading a name like Bryant or Contreras would be the only way to free up some room to make moves.

Last season in 52 games with the Cubs after being traded from the Detroit Tigers ahead of the trade deadline, Castellanos ended up compiling a .321 batting average to go along with 16 home runs and 36 RBI's. He helped rejuvenate the Cubs' lineup for a short period of time.

At 27 years old, Castellanos is entering the prime of his career. The Cubs would be wise to keep him around if they can possibly make it work financially.

All of that being said, it will be interesting to see where the talented outfielder ends up signing. Chicago still has hopes of bringing him back, but only time will tell.
