After seeing Russell Westbrook make history on Monday, Damian Lillard was among a number of players who took to Twitter to congratulate the Oklahoma City Thunder guard for the feat he achieved. He gave Westbrook tons of credit by letting his followers know that his vote for MVP is on him. He then took a shot at the Thunder guard and the other favorite to win the award, the Houston RocketsJames Harden.

This happened when the Portland Trail Blazers star received a tweet from a fan and called him out for not being able to defend the two MVP candidates. Lillard's response was touché.

Now in his fifth year in the league, Lillard is having his best season so far with averages of 27.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game. He may have led the Blazers in securing the eighth seed in the West, but has failed to bring the same success they had last year. It resulted to the 26-year-old Weber State product not being named an All-Star, mainly due to the slow start he and his team had.

Westbrook and Harden are both having career years and many believe the MVP award should be given to either one of them. While many players wouldn't be able to say that they can't be defended by the two aforementioned superstars, Lillard did so with confidence. However, if he wants to stay true to his claim and eventually set a matchup with the Thunder or Rockets, he'll need to raise his game a few notches higher. But that won't come easy with the Golden State Warriors, Portland's first round opponent, raring to blast their way through the early playoff stages.
