Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge has been oft-criticized for selecting Jaylen Brown as the third overall pick of the 2016 NBA Draft. Many called it a reach with several draft sites slotting Brown outside of the top five in mock drafts prior the event.

Even in retrospect, Ainge doesn’t seem to regret the decision to spend a first-round pick last year on the former California Golden Bear. He even went far as to say that he’d likely not give up Brown for almost anyone from the said draft class according to Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald.

“And like last year, there’s very few rookies — I don’t even remember the whole rookie class last year — but there’s very few kids I would trade Jaylen Brown for, and yet I think most of the world would say he’s like not even in the top 10 of rookies from last year’s class. But we wouldn’t trade him for almost any of those guys.”

Ainge has been known around the league as someone who has a tendency to make out-of-the-box decisions that in the end look sound. And drafting Brown seems to be one, as the incoming second-year pro has played well in his rookie season, averaging 6.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game while showing flashes of being a capable one-on-one defender.

The Celtics could’ve gone for anyone from Jamal Murray to Buddy Hield to Kris Dunn last year, but for now, Ainge is completely happy with Brown, who recently finished Summer League play with averages of 17.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in two games for the Celtics.
