The new Deathloop story trailer was featured in the most recent PlayStation Showcase, and its release date is just around the corner. Bethesda Softworks Senior Content Manager, Anne Lewis, sets up the game's premise in an official PlayStation Blog post:

“You wake up on a beach, no memory of how you got there or even who you are. A mysterious message floats before you, urging you to “break the timeloop.” You’re trapped on an island full of people who are trying to kill you. You die, then wake up back on that same beach. Day ends. Beach. Die. Beach. It’s enough to make you sick of beaches. Sick enough to start listening to those floating messages and do something about this timeloop. That’s Colt’s journey in Deathloop. Break the cycle by killing the people responsible for keeping it going, and maybe find a way off the island of Blackreef.

The island of Blackreef wasn’t always caught in a timeloop. It started off as an isolated fishing colony, but an anomaly in the area eventually attracted the attention of the military, and further down the line, the attention of the founding members of the AEON Program. These individuals and their followers came together to exploit the anomaly and create the timeloop that would ostensibly allow them to live forever.”

Deathloop Release Date: September 14, 2021

A side-effect of being stuck in the island's timeloop is amnesia – Colt, the main character, only has fleeting memories of his past. Players will be uncovering his own past as they also unveil the mysteries of the island itself.

The game revolves around assassinating eight Visionaries – killing them all will put an end to the timeloop and free its inhabitants from the repeating cycles. They all have different stories and daily routines, and figuring those out will be the key to successful assassinations. The most central among them is Julianna Blake – the first person Colt will meet, and the only other person on the island that retains their memories as each day resets.

Players can expect to traipse through the dangerous playground of Blackreef Island when Deathloop hits its release date on September 14, 2021.
