Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders is reportedly nearing a deal to become the next head coach of the Jackson State University football team, according to Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated.

The news was first reported by HBCU Sports’ Kenn Rashad; however, the university refuted the report by saying “nothing has been official.” However, despite the university’s denial, the hiring is almost official, according to Dellenger.

HBCU Sports’ Kenn Rashad also reported that a press conference announcing Sanders’ hiring is expected to happen as soon as Monday morning.

Sanders, who won two Super Bowl rings during his career, his currently the offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian High School in Texas. His son, Sedeur, is the starting quarterback for the team. Sanders is currently committed to play at Florida Atlantic University.

Nevertheless, the news about Deion Sanders becoming a college head coach isn’t that surprising, considering that he said it’ll happen back in January on a radio show.

“I’m going to be a head coach in college football next year,” he said in a live appearance on Dan Patrick’s radio show at the Super Bowl in January. “I’m that definite. I’m that assured that I am.”

This will be Sander’s first time coaching at a college level, as he never coached professionally or at the collegiate level before. Due to COVID-19, the Jackson State football will not be playing this fall; however, they’re expected to playin spring 2021 alongside the rest of the SWAC. Their first game is scheduled to be of Feb. 19, 2021.
