The death of Demaryius Thomas, fan favorite Denver Broncos wide receiver and even more beloved human to many, shocked the football world when it was announced in December of last year.

Demaryius Thomas had reportedly suffered a seizure, and it was suspected that such an incident is also what ultimately led to his untimely passing. Thomas had reportedly been suffering from seizures for over a year at that point after getting involved in a car accident back in 2019, which could have been the trigger to an intense seizure that proves to be fatal.

Now months after the tragic news, more information has come to light on his condition. According to a report from NBC news, Demaryius Thomas had Stage 2 chronic traumatic encephalopathy or more commonly known as CTE.

His family announced the findings in cooperation with the Concussion Legacy Foundation that helps raise awareness for the aforementioned condition in the world of American football.

Demaryius Thomas's mother admits that she noticed certain changed with her son that she suspected could be CTE-related in the past after awareness on the condition had heightened in recent years. She also vocalized her regret and expressed her desire for her son to serve as a cautionary tale of the risks involved in playing the game of football, particularly at the highest level.

Via NBC news:

“Once I became aware of CTE and began to familiarize myself with the symptoms, I noticed that Demaryius was isolating himself and I saw other changes in him,” Katina Smith, Demaryius’ mother said in a release from CLF.

“He was just so young, and it was horrible to see him struggle. His father and I hope all families learn the risks of playing football. We don’t want other parents to have to lose their children like we did.”

While late-stage CTE reportedly could potentially trigger epileptic seizures, those investigating Thomas's death aren't directly connecting the two given the 2019 accident. But having two existing brain conditions undoubtedly heightened the uncomfortable state the Broncos star existed in in the years leading up to his tragic death.
