While most players prefer to keep their relationships with their coaches limited to practices and games, Dennis Smith Jr. was pleased to have his with Rick Carlisle go beyond work.

The veteran head coach recently visited the rookie’s home, and spent time with him and his mom. Smith then took to his Twitter account to share a photo of them outside his house, proudly holding a Dallas Mavericks flag.

Carlisle’s visit goes to show that he willing to mentor the talented 19-year-old even outside the court, and make him feel welcome right away with the Mavs. Now as a professional, Smith is going to have to make a lot of adjustments to his lifestyle, especially being a highly touted first year player and entering the league at a young age.

Smith has been impressive in the Summer League, and is expected to play at a high level once the regular season starts. It was no secret that his team was looking for another point guard heading into the summer, and were looking for a veteran. However, their plans changed when they had the opportunity to add him to their fold, as Smith resolved their issues with the depth they had at the one spot. With the skill set that he has, and his head coach already giving him a lot of support, a lot of great things should come out from the NC State product, and could even turn out to be the steal of the draft.
