It's been almost a week since Will Smith marched up on stage at the Academy Awards, slapped Chris Rock for making a G.I. Jane joke towards his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, then proceeded to yell profanity at Rock. Right after Smith made the shocking decision to do so, Denzel Washington was seen talking to the King Richard star, telling him “At your highest moment, be careful, that's when the devil comes for you.”

Well, Denzel has now explained what exactly he meant by that on Saturday at a leadership summit. Via TMZ:

“There's a saying: When the devil ignores you, then you know you're doing something wrong. The devil goes, ‘Oh, no, leave him alone. He's my favorite.'”

“Conversely, when the devil comes at you, maybe it's because you're trying to do something right. And for whatever reason, the devil got ahold of Will Smith that night.”

Denzel did a good job of calming Smith down, who immediately regretted his decision. He ended up apologizing to Chris Rock on social media but didn't mention the incident during his emotional speech after being named the best actor for his role as Serena and Venus's father in King Richard.

Since then, Will Smith resigned from the Academy because of the backlash he's faced. Rock meanwhile, was asked about the whole ordeal during his comedy show in Boston earlier this week and revealed he's still processing everything.
