The Seattle Seahawks are hoping to see improvement in their secondary in 2019. So far in training camp, DeShawn Shead has made it even more difficult on Seattle to make decisions in their secondary.

During the Seahawks' second preseason contest against the Minnesota Vikings, Shead was the first backup safety to come into the game. The veteran defensive back replaced Bradley McDougald on the third series at strong safety.

Shead spent some time with starting free safety Tedric Thompson and rookie Marquise Blair. Overall, Shead played very well, recording four tackles, an interception, and a touchdown.

The pick-six by Shead showed that the 30-year-old defensive back still has great ball skills and can make plays on the backend of the secondary. However, Shead has spent his entire career playing at cornerback.

Shead began his career with Seattle when the team signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Portland State in 2012. After a few seasons of being a bench warmer, Shead started in 21 games between 2015-16.

In those two seasons, the veteran cornerback combined for two interceptions, 22 deflections, and 129 tackles. A torn ACL caused Shead to miss the majority of the 2017 season with the Seahawks.

Then, in 2018, Shead found himself with the Detroit Lions, signing as a free agent. In Detroit, Shead was active for 12 games but only started in one game. At the end of the 2018 season, Shead finished with 18 tackles and a forced fumble.

Now, in his eighth year in the NFL, Shead is making the most of his second chance with the Seahawks at strong safety.
