The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired right-handed starting pitcher Mike Leake in a trade with the Seattle Mariners, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

This is certainly a bit of a strange move for the Diamondbacks seeing as how they also traded Zack Greinke to the Houston Astros, so their decision to acquire another veteran starter after trading away a superior one is definitely puzzling (although Arizona was able to get out from under Greinke's contract, which probably played a role).

Leake has made 22 starts this season, going 9-8 with a 4.40 ERA while allowing 153 hits and striking out 100 batters over 137 innings of work.

The 31-year-old came up with the Cincinnati Reds in 2010, going 8-4 with a 4.23 ERA and surrendering 158 hits while fanning 91 hitters across 138.1 frames of action during his rookie campaign.

Leake then proceeded to emerge as a reliable starter for the Reds, with his best season coming in 2013 when he went 14-7 with 3.37 ERA, giving up 193 hits while registering 122 punch-outs through 192.1 innings.

The San Diego native spent the first five-and-a-half seasons of his career in Cincinnati before being dealt to the San Francisco Giants in 2015, and after spending half of a season with the Giants, he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals.

However, Leake was a major disappointment with the Cardinals, posting a 4.69 ERA in 2016 and a 4.21 ERA through 26 starts in 2017 before being traded to the Mariners that August.

Leake then went 10-10 with a 4.36 ERA during his first full season in Seattle last year.

He owns a lifetime 4.05 ERA over 291 career outings.
