Heading to Pier 36 in New York City on Monday for the inaugural NBA Awards Show, Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki attended it as he was scheduled to present one of the awards on the night. That was his expectation, but a surprise was in store for him.

The 39-year-old German international was totally caught off guard when it was announced that he was the recipient of the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award, for serving as a good example to all his teammates, and a leader to them on and off the court. The winner is also considered the “idol teammate” who exemplifies selfless play and commitment to his team.

The winner of the prestigious award is chosen by all players who voted who among the 12 finalists deserves it the most. It was first handed out in 2013 and Chauncey Billups became the first player to receive it. Past winners also include Shane Battier, Vince Carter and Tim Duncan.

Despite already winning almost all awards the league has to offer, including the MVP, Finals MVP and even 3-point shooting champion, this honor is also special to Nowitzki as it shows the respect the players around the league have for him. Being surprised by winning it also proves that his demeanor around his teammates comes natural to him, and treats them all the same.
