Coming into the 2020 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins were thought to have had interest in drafting one of the top running backs. So far through round five, they had not selected a running back – because they traded for one instead.

The San Francisco 49ers, according to Adam Shefter, sent running back Matt Breida to the Dolphins in return for a fifth-round selection, helping solve their RB woes in a huge way.

Breida is a much-more proven entity than that of a fresh draft selection, even if the ceilings are quite on the same level.

In his 2019 season, Breida put up 623 rushing yards and 1 rushing touchdown across 13 games, averaging a very healthy 5.1 yards per carry. In the passing game, he hauled in 19 passes (on 22 targets) for 120 yards and a receiving score as well.

While those stats are not super exciting, Breida was forced to vie for playing time among the likes of Jerick McKinnon, Tevin Coleman, Raheem Mostert Jr., and Jeff Wilson, as well as fullback / H-back Kyle Juszczyk, which made it tough for him to showcase his true potential.

For Breida, this thankfully presents him with a fresh start and a much better opportunity to showcase his talents, next to new starting QB Tua Tagovailoa and an upgraded offensive line. This will be a great chance for Breida to work in a different style of offense than what he was a part of in SF, which will help showcase his talents and get him out in space more.

With the traded fifth-round selection, the 49ers selected West Virginia University offensive tackle Colton McKivitz at 153 overall.
