The Miami Dolphins could be shorthanded at running back in Week 9, with Matt Breida's status in jeopardy. Ahead of Miami's bout with the Arizona Cardinals, Brian Flores shed some light on Breida's availability for Sunday, per ESPN's Cameron Wolfe.

On Thursday morning, the Dolphins are planning on putting Myles Gaskins on injured reserve due to a knee injury. Gaskins sustained the knee injury during last week's convincing win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Under the new rules of the injured reserve, Gaskins will have to miss a minimum of three games for Miami. While Gaskins recovers from his knee ailment, Matt Breida is also dealing with a hamstring injury of his own.

Even though Flores was planning on having Breida replace Gaskins — since they share similar skillsets — it appears the Dolphins are leaning toward sitting Matt Breida this week. Flores pointed out that hamstring issues can be tricky and the team seems to be taking a cautious approach with him.

If both Gaskins and Breida are sidelined, then Jordan Howard, Patrick Laird, and Salvon Ahmed are the only healthy running backs that can suit up on Sunday. The Dolphins also acquired DeAndre Washington from the Kansas City Chiefs ahead of the NFL trade deadline.

But with COVID-19 guidelines, Washington won't be able to join the team until Week 10 at the earliest. In all likeliness, Howard is going to be the No. 1 back for the Dolphins against the Cardinals. Howard has produced only 14 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries in his first eight weeks in Miami.
